Learn about the crochet hooks types – Which one to use
Hi today I’m going to show you the types of crochet hooks we have on the market. Choosing the right needle for each job is directly linked to the result of the job.
There are several types of needles, brands, materials and measurements so I’m going to show you the most common types you’ll need to make crochet.
Crochet Needles: Stainless Steel
This type of needle is very suitable for those who are going to work with thin threads. The most common measurements (in millimeters) of the stainless steel needle are: 0.6 mm, 0.75 mm, 1.0 mm, 1.25 mm, 1.5 mm, 1.75 mm and 2.0 mm. These are the default measurements but you may find suppliers that use their own measurement. The stainless steel needle is the most versatile of all, but remember that for thick threads, wools or strings it is not recommended.
Tip: Always have the measurements 1.0mm, 1.25mm, 1.5mm with you; sometimes the 0.6 mm measurement can help when making details on dish towels.
Crochet Needles: Aluminum
Unlike stainless steel needles, aluminum needles are recommended for thicker threads, wools and strings. The most common measurements (in millimeters) are 2.0 mm, 2.5 mm, 3.0 mm, 3.5 mm, 4.0 mm, 4.5 mm, 5.0 mm, 5.5 mm, 6.0 mm and 7.0 mm (whew). Most jobs are done with this type of needle because it is very light, which means that it’s not so tiring.
Tip: the most used of this type is the 3.0 mm, so have one at home!
Crochet Needles: Bamboo
In recent years bamboo needles have become very popular, because in addition to giving a softer sensation while we work, they are made from aq sustainable resource, a word often used nowadays. Another advantage is the strength of this type of needle. An interesting fact is that many crochet teachers prefer to use the bamboo needle for beginners, because bamboo is not as smooth as aluminum or stainless steel needles. I don’t particularly use bamboo needles for two reasons: Due to the fact they are “handcrafted”, they are very difficult to find in the market, and also for that reason the price is a little high.

List of the most common crochet thread types
In this part I will show you what are the most common crochet threads and their uses. All the tutorials I post here on the blog for you have been informing you about the type of line you need in order to do the job, but when you do your own work without relying on a recipe or chart, you should choose the type of line that suits you best, choosing the color, material and thickness of the crochet thread.
We can classify crochet thread types into three categories: synthetic yarns (acrylic, nylon, polyester), natural yarns (bamboo, cotton) and animal yarns (wool, cashmere). Besides knowing the types of lines, we must take into account the variation of the line weight. The thread weigh you choose will determine the size of the crochet hook. The thicker the thread, the larger the needle needed to make crochet.
Examples of use for each type of line:
o Nylon: Drawstrings and Handbags.
o Cotton: Coating, Bracelets, Cushion Cover and Jackets.
o Wool: Scarf, Baby Shoes and Blouses.
